Tips of the Month
Scuba allows you to discover a whole world of flora and fauna. It offers both a sporting challenge and a close contact with nature, but requires a responsible attitude and team spirit. Holiday destinations around the world have diving and give the opportunity to pass the necessary examinations. Such training is essential to acquire sufficient skills, to dive safely and to know the risks.
What to consider before the trip?
Physical state
Disease and physical restrictions, even if they do not cause problems in normal times, can have dangerous consequences in the water. In order not to be a danger to others and to oneself, it is essential to have a medical check-up before going on a diving holiday. Basically, we advise against diving for pregnant women and people with severe overweight. Children should not dive before the age of 13.
Drugs and diving
Those who are already regularly or occasionally taking drugs before going on a diving holiday - especially if the drugs are for the cardiovascular system - should consult their doctor to ensure that their health allows scuba diving. Regular intake of drugs used to prevent malaria (in areas with corresponding risk) is compatible with diving if the drug used does not have side effects. An evaluation of this criterion is possible because the use of these medications should already start one week before departure. If the drug (e.g. mefloquine) is followed by dizziness, anxiety, nausea, etc.., you should stop and talk about having a different preventive treatment of malaria with an experienced doctor. If necessary, we can ask for advice - by phone or fax – to the Tropical Institute, to the centre of vaccination or the physician who prescribed the drug in Switzerland. Diving will have to wait until the side effects have disappeared. Sedatives, sleeping pills and powerful painkillers are not compatible with diving.
Certificate of Fitness
Almost every diving level requires a certificate of fitness for diving. In general, it is established by the general practitioner or a doctor close to the diving club. The "Swiss Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine Societey” has developed a structured form that determines the ability to dive. Thus, even doctors who do not have specific knowledge in diving medicine may make the review properly. Important: the majority of diving accidents is not due to pre-existing non-identified medical conditions, but to the diver's inappropriate behaviour.
